Description : The design of the coin commemorating the Holy Year of Mercy is by Mariangela Crisciotti and shows Martin of Tours (316‐397), a soldier of the Roman Imperial Guard from 331 to 356. He is depicted on horseback with his cloak and sword, out of kindness he gives half of his cloak to an almost naked and freezing poor man whom he met at the city gate of Amiens. The following night, Jesus Christ is said to have appeared to Martin in a dream, clothed with that half cloak. He was baptised in 351 and after being appointed bishop of Tours in 371, he founded the monastery of Marmoutier. King Clovis of the Franks promoted Martin to the status of national saint and patron of the Franco‐Merovingian kings. To the left of the motif is the reason for commemoration "GIUBILEO DELLA MISERCORDIA" (Jubilee of Mercy) and on the right "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO" (Vatican City) and the year of issue "2016". Below is the initial "R" the mint mark of the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in Rome together with the logos "M. CRISCIOTTI" of the coin designer and "MOMONI INC." (INC. = incisore / engraver) of the engraver Claudia Momoni.
